The way we “celebrate” continues to evolve, and it’s an amazing thing to watch. Couples have found ways to creatively honor the past, as well as start new traditions that are unique to their story.

Common traditions include the lighting of unity candles, tying the three strand cord, jumping the broom, and taking communion. Below is a list of unique up and coming traditions courtesy of Wedding Wire that couples around the country are including in their celebrations.

1) wedding day time capsule.

What a beautiful way to prep for the future! I’ve heard of freezing your cake and eating it on your first anniversary, but writing a love letter to the future version of your partner is the sweetest way to keep those “honeymoon phase” feelings alive. According to Wedding Wire, couples fill a box with love letters, their favorite wine and any other special mementos during their ceremony. You choose whether to open your time capsule at the 1, 5 or 10 year mark. How special!

2) Unity wine

In this tradition Wedding Wire suggests a non-religious way to include wine in your ceremony. Often times we see it’s use in communions, and

Similar ceremonies. With this sip, there are both white and red wine options available. The couple mixes the white & red together, making a new wine, they both sip, representing two souls coming together. I’m so interested in how that would taste!

3) Unity Tree (OR PLANT) Planting ceremony

If sustainability is important to you and your partner, what an awesome tradition this is! Pretty self explanatory, but during your ceremony, you and your partner plant a seed and take turns adding soil to the tree or plant. Taking care of the plant represents the nurturing you and partner offer to your marriage, according to Wedding Wire. Imagine coming back in 30, 40 years to see how big the tree has grown!

4) Unity Painting

My husband and I did a variation of this tradition, and I still love the concept. Now Wedding Wire suggests a paint pour, where couples each have their individual color and together they put it onto a blank canvas. No artistic skill required, simply allow the two colors to mix, representing the union of two creative souls!
